Abstract

The present study is to determine the antibacterial activity and antifouling proper-ties from carapace of female mud crab, Scylla serrata. This is a preliminary study as there are no literature reviews or researches available in screening of bioactive compound from female mud crab, Scylla serrata. Therefore this study was carried out in order to determine whether female carapace of mud crab, Scylla serrata contains bioactive compounds which have the ability to deteriorate the pharmaceutical industry, bacterial strains tendency to generate resistance and also whether it would pose health hazard to the consumers. Three different extraction solvent were used namely; methanol, acetone and ethyl acetate to extract the bioactive compound from female carapace. Four species of bacteria of Gram-positive and Gram-negative were used which are Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus. The antibacterial activity was determined by using Disc Diffusion Test (DDT) method. Out of three solvent, only methanol crude extraction shows zone of inhibition among four species of bacteria. Meanwhile, antifouling test was carried out to detect attachment and growth of bacteria on surface immersed in seawater. Staining process was took place to determine the clear glass slides. Unfortunately, there were no clear glass slides found among three crude extracted solvent in four species of bacteria. However, further research is required to justify these preliminary findings. The results obtained can be used as a guideline for further research in this field at the future.
