Abstract

Peninsular of Malaysia is surrounded by oceans which experiencing coastal changes due to some processes. Several factors within the coastal environment combine to drive coastal erosion and accretion. Coastal areas are so valuable that all civilizations have preferred this area throughout history. This study aims to study the impacts of coastal changes and to determine the factors which contribute to coastal changes along Kuala Besar to Kuala Sungai Pengkalan Datu. The area recorded 4 meters per year in the rate of erosion which results from a combination of natural factors and that is aggravated by human action. Geographic information system (GIS) is used in order to study coastal changes along Kuala Besar to Kuala Sungai Pengkalan Datu. This study involved the encoding and digitization of Landsat7 satellite image of coastal area for a year 2000, 2005 and 2012 for analyzing the coastal changes. The layers of coastal for these three years have been overlay to see the changes in coastal area in terms of coastline, coastal area, alienated land and sinuosity index. Main processes involved are erosion and accretion. Results of the analysis have contributed towards an improved understanding of coastal erosion in Malaysia and shoreline changes in the Malaysian coastal environment. Rapid growth of the Dabong, Kelantan area has resulted in growing concerns over the accessibility to the area and suitable land for development. The principal purpose of this study is to provide a current and general geologic framework for Dabong, Kelantan. A compilation of maps is presented. Mapping and compilation of the previous study has refined general geology of the study area. Major structural elements within the study area are not much different than described by previous study. Observations and others portrayed on this new series of maps will provide a better understanding of the development of the area. This geologic map will allow the flexibility of relatively easy revisions and better understanding in geologic knowledge.
