Abstract

A brief study on non volant small mammals was conducted at R.E.A.C.H Biodiversity Centre, Cameron Highlands. Sixty cage traps were used to capture the non Volant small mammals using ‘Pisang Emas’ (Musa acuminata) as bait and the diversity and abundance of non volant small mammals at R.E.A.C.H Biodiversity Centre was documented. According to the results obtained, a total of 47 individuals consisting of eight species of non volant small mammals representing two families, Sciuridaea and Muridae was captured. Species with the highest captured rate non- volant small mammals was Niviventer Cameroni with a record of 18 individuals. Niviventer cameroni is listed as Vulnerable which explains its limited range. Other species that were captured are Raztus tiomanicus with 10 individuals, Berylmys bowersi with six individuals, Rattus exulans with five individuals, Leopoldamys ciliatus with four individuals, Dremamys rufigenis with two individuals, Lariscus insignis and Callasciums erythraeus with one individual. More field studies need to be done at R.E.A.C.H Biodiversity Centre in order to ensure better management of non volant small mammals in the future.
