Abstract

Water quality at Sungai Geting was studied based on physico-chemical parameters and Water Quality lndex (WQI). Six sampling stations were selected to represent Sungai Geting and various human activities along the river. Three replication measurements were made at each station by using YSI Multiprobe parameter and turbid meter. This study was carried out within two months (July and August, 2017). The physico-chemical parameters including pH, salinity, turbidity, temperature, electric conductivity (EC), total dissolved solid (TDS), total suspended solid (TSS), dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N) were conducted. A statistical analysis of Kruskall-Wallis test indicated that there was significant difference between each parameter at every sampling station. The Pearson’s correlation test was conducted to show a relationship between all physico-chemical parameters at Sungai Geting. Then, mean values of all parameters were compared with permissible limits set by National Water Quality Standards (NWQS) for Malaysia and World Health Organization (WHO). Based on the results, all parameters were within permissible limit except TDS (7150 mg/L), turbidity (15.02 mg/L), EC (11641 us/cm), BOD (11.73 mg/L) and COD (335.49 mg/L). Furthermore, the calculated WQI indicated that Sungai Geting is classified under Class III (65.66) which considered as slightly polluted. The river can be used as water supply after extensively treatment and for selective tolerant fish species. The selected heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu) were determined at Sungai Geting and analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma — Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). Concentration of Zn and Cu were not detected at Sungai Geting. Presence of Pb (0.00177 mg/L) and Cd (0.00034 mg/L) were still within the permissible limit by NWQS and WHO. Hence, the overall result revealed that water quality of Sungai Geting should be monitor continuously since deteriorated of water quality was occurred.
