Abstract

This research study focused on the Geology and Settlement Planning Using Geographic Information System (GIS) Approach at Kuala Balah, Jeli. It was conducted by using the secondary data that was provided from the trusted sources like Department of Mineral and Geoscience, USGS website as well as Department of Statistics Malaysia. This research aims to produce the geological map of Kuala Balah with the scale of 1:25,000 by using GIS software. According to geology of the study area, there are three lithology which are oldest lithology is intrusive rocks in Permian to Jurassic period. The second oldest lithology is phyllite, slate and shale with subordinate sandstone and schist from Gua Musang Formation and it is under Permian age. Next, the youngest lithology is interbedded sandstone, siltstone and shale. This lithology is in Triassic period and from Gunung Rabong Formation. The GIS software was used to produce the geological map from the spatial data to be converted into raster data. Moreover, the derivative maps that derived from the seven chosen parameters like lithology, slope, aspect, elevation, drainage density, land-use and population density were generated in this GIS software. The maps were overlaid by using Weighted Overlay Method (WOM) in order to reach the second objectives which is to produce the future growth potential of settlement planning map of Kuala Balah area. The map was indicated by the scale from low to very high which are represented by the level of future growth potential of settlement planning in the study area. In this case, the study area was finalized as high future growth potential of settlement planning considering the geohazard factors (parameters). The population needs also were taken as consideration in determining future growth potential of settlement planning like cost factor and favourable environment. Therefore, the geological map and the future growth potential of settlement planning map is not having a purpose to rebuild the existing settlement in the research area, but it is crucial as it can be a suggestion area for the settlement planner to design the settlement planning in the study area and for the government to manage the settlement planning in the future.
