Abstract

This case study examines how traditional retail operations might include online platforms, with a particular emphasis on Warisan Daily Mart Sdn Bhd, a grocery shop in Kelantan, Malaysia. Ms. Tan Jern Ai, the Owner, had to contend with changing customer habits and a competitive market to maintain the business. Ms. Tan developed a digital strategy and used TikTok as an online selling platform in order to overcome these obstacles.

The well-known retail grocery store Warisan Daily Mart Sdn Bhd has historically relied on in- store sales to make money. But in order to maintain the viability and expansion of the company,
the emergence of e-commerce and modifications in customer purchasing behaviors required a calculated strategic change. Since year 2023, however, the company was facing some stiff headwinds that threatened its traditional approach to business. As new physical shop retail competitors "grew like mushrooms after rain", a fierce local market competition has seriously curtailed sales. Moreover, online shopping increases its popularity more and takes a long step ahead of foot traffic in the way peoples buy which has put even greater pressure on declining sales by lowering shop visits. In view of the financial hardship due to current challenges, the directors have collectively decided that all director fees for Warisan Daily Mart Sdn Bhd will be put on hold. They have shown their sustained financial commitment in order to help fund the digital transformation efforts and ensure a stable financial foundation for years to come. Investing more wisely in areas like digital advertising and operations efficiency, the company believes it can offset today's market pressures to recapture competitive differentiation. Ms. Tan has hold comprehensive discussions with her supervisors and team members regarding the issues, thus evaluating the situation and developing a well-detailed solution strategy. After the comprehensive efforts and idea contributing session by the team, it was identified that digital transformation was one of the best strategies to approach declining sales and maintain the company’s competitive position.

Ms. Tan understood that the market was changing and that she needed to adjust. She used TikTok's enormous popularity and captivating characteristics to her advantage when introducing the platform to the online selling world in order to reach a larger audience.

The incorporation of TikTok into Warisan Daily Mart Sdn Bhd's business plan is a prime example of how conventional retail can successfully work with digital platforms to guarantee expansion and sustainability. The creative strategy used by Ms. Tan Jern Ai emphasizes how crucial it is to use internet resources and adjust to market trends in order to maintain competitiveness and sustainability in the retail industry.

This case study provides insightful information for other firms looking to adapt and prosper in the digital age by showcasing how internet platforms can assist in ensuring sustainability of traditional retail operations.
