Milk and other milk products are not only an important source of nutrients for people, but also provide livelihood income for farmers, manufacturers, shop owners as well as other investors in the dairy business process. Lately, heavy metal contamination in milk and dairy products, play a significant role in public health as they may be the cause of the prevalence of various diseases and injuries. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the concentration of Pb, Cd, Cu, Fe, and Zn in several brands of milk products in Malaysia. The concentration of heavy metals and trace elements were analysed using AAS. The pattern of heavy metals in several brands of milk in Malaysia with overall mean concentration was analysed as Zn (8.043 ppm) > Fe (1.140 pm) > Pb (0.383 ppm) > Cu (0.288 ppm) > Cd (0.005 pm. Range of mean concentration for analysed samples were Pb: 0.142 - 0.670 ppm, Cd: -0.02 - 0.02 pm, Cu: 0.210 - 0.360, Fe: 0.620 - 1.380 ppm and Zn: 5.010 - 13.63 ppm. In conclusion, the mean concentration of all heavy metals;
Pb, Fe, and Zn found in selected milk samples Brand F, Brand G, Brand M, and Brand D were exceeded the permissible limit. However, the mean concentration of Cd and Cu are within the permissible limit proposed by WHO. Hence, the heavy metals concentration levels in all milk products must be monitored comprehensively with respect to human health and potentially safe for use.
