Abstract

Padang Merdeka has been known to many since 1844 when Istana Balai Besar was first built during the reign of Sultan Muhammad II (Long Senik Mulut Merah). Howver, it those days, it was known as Padang Kelupang, then later known as the Padang Bank after a bank was opened nearby in 1912 (The Mercantile Bank of India Limited or Bank Kerapu). It started to be known as Padang Merdeka after the independence of Kelantan from Britain was declared here, on 31st August 1957.

The Padang Merdeka is a spot of great historical values. Aside from being the site for the state declaration of independance, it was also where the body of a national hero Tok Janggut was hanged upside down in public by the British. Among the historical items which could be found here is a special memorial, built by the British just after the World War I (1914-1918) for the British nationals, who while serving in Kelantan, were sent to the battlefields of Europe and were killed in combat. Their names are engraved on metal plaques in Malay, English, Chinese and Tamil.
