Abstract

Srengenge loomed ugly as the devil. Sometimes ugly as an old woman. Sometimes like a fat tapir. One day Srengenge had to be cleared. Every time Awang Cik Teh finished his rice meal and went out on his veranda to digest, he cursed that hill. The Srengenge is to become farmland.

This desire divides the population of the small, remote village at the foot of the hill. There is a conflict between those who want to keep up with the times and those who cling to the old values and believe in spirits and supernatural phenomena. The situation escalates when the village chief, Imam Hamad, dies. Were there supernatural forces at work, taking revenge for his evil intentions?
