Abstract

Motivation is defined as eagerness and willingness to do something without needing to be told or forced to do it. Over the last three decades more and more studies have been conducted to answer the question, what motivate someone to be entrepreneurs ? But nevertheless, most studies have been conducted in developed contries. There is a dearth of literature pertaining to the above topic in developing countries,including Malaysia. The purpose of this research is to investigate what motivate Indian entrepreneurs to operate Indian restaurant in Malaysia, using David McClelland motivational theory as a basis of investigation. According to the theory the four motivations of entrepreneurship are need of achievement, authority and power, affiliation and safety and security. A score of Indian restaurant owners in Selangor and Kelantan were approached and data were gathered using face to face interviews. The results of the study are in line with most motivational factors of David McClelland's. Delving into the research could provide tantalizing insights into entrepreneurial motivations amongs Indian restaurant entrepreneurs in the above mentioned states
