Abstract

The study was conducted to determine the physical and chemical parameters in Lata Janggut and Lata Renyok which located in Kelantan. This study aims to identify the differences in physical and chemical parameters of water quality in Lata Janggut and Lata Renyok during the peak and off-peak seasons. Three sampling locations were randomly chosen where the distance between the first points to the second point was 100 meters and followed with the next point. All water samples in each location were taken six times on different days, where three times represent the peak season and the remaining sampling days represent off peak season. A total of 108 water samples were taken in both recreational areas throughout the study to analyze the ex-situ and in-situ parameters such as temperature, turbidity, Total Dissolved Solid (TDS), pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and conductivity. The ranges for the physico-chemical parameters reading during peak season were 26.73ºC-28.74ºC (temperature), 2.01NTU-2.73NTU (turbidity), 0.022mg/l- 0.026mg/l (TDS), 6.57-7.26 (pH), 5.51mg/l- 6.45mg/l (DO), 1.67mg/l-2.30mg/l (BOD), 0.023mS/cm-0.041mS/cm (conductivity). Moreover, the ranges for the physico-chemical parameters reading during off peak season were 24.63ºC-25.62ºC (temperature), 1.45NTU-1.78NTU (turbidity), 0.022mg/l- 0.044mg/l (TDS), 6.89- 7.13 (pH), 6.21mg/l- 6.68mg/l (DO), 1.25mg/l-1.56mg/l (BOD), 0.025mS/cm- 0.044mS/cm (conductivity). The analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey Pairwise Comparison showed that almost all of the water quality parameters including temperature, turbidity, Total Dissolved Solid (TDS), pH, and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) were slightly affected during peak season especially in Lata Janggut. However, overall water quality in Lata Renyok and Lata Janggut still in safe condition and suitable for any intended purpose according to the Interim National Water Quality Standard (INWQS) of Malaysia. Therefore, continuous monitoring of water quality in Lata Renyok and Lata Janggut are strongly needed to ensure the level of water quality in permissible limit.
