Abstract

In this study, the green synthesis approach was adapted to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The prepared silver nanoparticles were characterized by UV- Visible spectrophotometer, X- Ray Diffraction (XRD), X- Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Fourier Transformation Infrared (FTIR) respectively. The UV- Vis spectra of AgNPs revealed abroad absorption band between 350- 450 nm contributing to the Surface Plasmon Vibration of metal nanoparticles. XRD analysis result revealed the cubic shape with 20- 40 nm size of AgNPs. XRF analysis confirmed the presence of silver in nanoparticles. The presence of amine (NH₂), alcohol (OH), and carboxylic functional group were confirmed by FTIR analysis. Antibacterial activity of AgNPs against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was carried out by disc diffusion method with increasing concentration of nanoparticles and enhance inhibition zone was observed. These results revealed that silver nanoparticles can be synthesized using Melastoma malabatricum extract. The synthesized silver nanoparticles can inhibit bacteria growth.
