Abstract

This research was conducted to assess the groundwater potential at Bandar Gua Musang, Kelantan by utilization of resistivity survey in selected location on basis of accessibility. The main objectives of the study were to produce an updated geological map of study area in scale of 1: 25,000, to identify the presence of groundwater potential and to determine the depth of groundwater potential at selected location. Geological mapping method was done to identify the geomorphology, lithology and geological structures of the study area. Mountains, hills, karst, fluvial and plains landform were identified in the study area. Phyllite, slate and shale unit from Gua Musang Formation served as the oldest lithology in the study area, followed by Gua Musang Formation Limestone in Lower Triassic, Semantan Formation siltstone in Upper Triassic and last granite intrusion in Tertiary Period as the youngest rock unit in study area. Three standard Schlumberger electrode configuration arrays were used and the data was recorded using ABEM Terrameter SAS 4000. The field survey was conducted along the three profiles which provide a continuous coverage of the resistivity imaging below surface. The results showed that there is a low resistivities layer which interpreted as shallow groundwater potential present in the Survey Line 1 ranging a depth from 4.0 m to 17.0 m. High resistivity values of limestone bedrock are associated with zone of sandy clay soils are showed in another two survey lines.
