Abstract

The study area for geology investigation underlies in Bandar Baru, Tanah Merah area with size about 25 Km2 and for water quality analysis the study area was located at sand mining area. This research objective is to produce a geological map of Bandar Baru, Tanah Merah at scale 1:25000 and to analyse the water quality according to physical and chemical parameters using water sample also to investigate the oil and grease content in river water at Tanah Merah subjected to sand mining activities. In producing geological map, field studies was conducted at Bandar Baru, Tanah Merah area. ArcGIS software 10.3 was used to produce geological map of study area. The geological map that was produced consist of alluvium and andesite. While, for the water quality and oil and grease analysis four sample water was collected. For some parameter such as pH, temperature, total dissolved solid (TDS), dissolved oxygen (DO) was measured in situ with HACH YSI 556 multi parameter and for other parameters such as turbidity, total suspended solid, nitrogen ammonia, nitrate and nitrite was measured using HACH DR 900 Colorimeter at laboratory. Hence, for determination of oil and grease Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used. From all the result obtained from water quality analysis, majority parameters from all sample was not exceeds the water INWQS limit that indicate the river water at Bandar Baru Tanah Merah was a clean river with exception for certain parameter which is dissolved oxygen (DO) and turbidity that had exceeds the limit as a result of sand mining activities. Besides that, for oil and grease investigation, it can be conclude that the river at study area was not polluted by oil and grease spill from sand mining area, it still controllable and not exceeds the limit.
