Abstract

The number of Leptospirosis cases and deaths in Kelantan from 2009-2015 showed increasing trends from year to year, with Jeli District held the highest record for the number of deaths. This study play an important role to give the right information about the causes of Leptospirosis that can be transmitted from a contaminated creature towards the publics. This research focusing about the physical and chemical parameters of Leptospira sp., at Lata Janggut. Lata Janggut is part of Sungai Long, and is recognized as the natural recreational area in Kelantan. In-situ data measurement, such as Conductivity, pH, Total Dissolved Solid, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Turbidity, Temperature and Salinity were taken by using multiparameter (YSI 556) and HACH DR 900 Calorimeter as the physical parameters, meanwhile the chemical parameters such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Ammoniacal Nitrogen (NH3N) and Total Suspended Solid were measured as ex-situ parameters by using APHA method spectrophotometer (DRB 2800) and DO probe meter (HQ40d). The characterization of the 16 elements of heavy metal was determined by using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Water Quality Index (WQI) of the Lata Janggut was analysed as slightly polluted, with 74.532 (Class III) and 72.133 (Class III) according to the WQI value suggested by DOE of Malaysia, at the direct and shaded sun area respectively. The area was slightly polluted due to the unhygienic conditions of the surrounding environment. Based on the gram staining procedures, it was indicated that Lata Janggut was free from Leptospirosis since there was no Leptospira sp. found in the study period that further discussed as the ecological parameters of Leptospira serovars at Lata Janggut.
