Abstract

This research were carried out at University Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) Jeli Campus and its vicinity around Jeli, Kelantan with coordinate from latitude 5°46'30"N to 5°44'0"N and longitude 101°5130"E to 101°54'0". The purpose of this study were to update a geological map in the study area and to determine the type of igneous rock by using petrography analysis. The methodologies that were used in this research start from preliminary study including study from literature review and base map. Next, fieldwork studies was done through geological mapping and rock sampling. The samples was then study in the laboratory investigations that divided into macroscopic examinations, microscopic examinations and X-Ray Powder Diffraction. Then, data analysis and interpretation of location, samples, and structure was made. Next stage was done by report writing and submit the report. The types of topographic unit in the study area were undulating unit, mountainous unit and hilly unit. Meanwhile, drainage pattern in the study area were dendritic and trellis. This study also demonstrate the mechanical, chemical, and biological weathering and the rill erosion also had occur. Structural geology including negative lineament and joint analysis have the trending towards the northwest (NW)-southeast (SE), while for the positive lineament has trending towards northeast(NE)-southwest(SW) within study area. The lithology that were identified are plutonic igneous rock, specifically biotite granite porphyry and medium grained biotite granite porphyry and also metamorphic rock specifically gneiss. However, the metamorphic rocks are not mapable as it only presents at small area with limited availability of outcrop and thus not significant. Granite in the study area occured within mesozoic era in period Triassic, while, the alluvium was occured during Quaternary period. The formation of study area was included into Kemahang Granite. The textures for medium grained biotite granite are phaneritic while for biotite granite porphyry are phaneritic and porphyritic. Minerals contained in the rock are majority alkali feldspar, plagioclase, biotite, and quartz. Meanwhile the texture for gneiss is foliated.
