General geology and geomechanical characterization of schist have been conducted in Jalan Baru Kusial, Tanah Merah, Kelantan. The purposes of this research are to produce geological map of study area at the scale 1: 25000, to analyse rock material strength of schist and to investigate the rock mass strength of schist. The geological mapping was conducted in study area to determine the geology formation. There are two types of lithology of study area which is igneous and metamorphic rock. Igneous rock is granite and metamorphic rock is schist and quartzite schist. The age of granite is Tertiary while schist rock is Permian. Geomechanical of schist are divided into two, which is rock material and rock mass strength. Rock material strength of schist is determined using point load test on 15 samples from 3 different slopes. The rock material strength of slope 1 is 0.08 MPa, slope 2 is 0.06 MPa and slope 3 is 0.05 MPa, which can classifies as very low strength. While the rock mass strength is determined using rock mass rating (RMR) on 3 different slopes. Rating valtie for slope 1, 2, and 3 are 52%, 55% and 53% respectively. All the slope an classifies in class III or fair rock mass.
