Abstract

Heavy metal contamination has become a worldwide problem through disturbing the normal functions of rivers and lakes. Floods are common natural disaster occurring in most parts of the world. It is considered to be one of the weather-related natural disasters. The study involve the determination of heavy metals concentration in selected soil from flood affected areas and compare the heavy metals concentration between four different study areas. The soil samples were obtained duplicates and the concentration of heavy metals was determined by AAS. Overall concentration of Pb, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Cr, Cd, Cr and Ni in the soil samples ranges 0.46 mg/L to 1.58 mg/L, 0.25 mg/L to 3.40 mg/L, 28.89 mg/L to 44.16 mg/L, 11.33 mg/L to 56.13 mg/L, 964.29 mg/L to 1850.65 mg/L, 0.37 mg/L to 0.72 mg/L, 0.00 mg/L and 0.04 mg/L to 0.30 mg/L respectively. From this result generally the order observed result for this study were Fe>Zn>Mn>Pb>Cu>Cr>Ni>Cd. This study shown that Kota Bharu have contaminated with Fe (1850.65 mg/L) while Dabong, Kota Bharu, Pasir Mas and Bachok shown the lowest contamination of Cd (0.00 mg/L). The possible implication of these heavy metals to the environment, animals and humans was discussed.
