Abstract

Soil mechanics become vital element especially in constructing engineering purpose such as for design of building, highway, slopes and others. Thus, it is important to study the physical properties of soil. Mostly the study area covered approximately about 27km2 and bounded by the latitude 05ᶿ49ᶿ15ᶿ until 05ᶿ47ᶿ15ᶿ and within the longitude fi'om l02ᶿ3ᶿ0ᶿ until l02°6ᶿ15ᶿ. It is located 10km from Tanah Merah town. This research focused on the general geology and soil physical properties in Gual Ipoh. The petrography study showed that mica-schist dominantly present in the eastern part of the study area. Several methods were conducted to determine the physical properties of soil in Gual Ipoh. This included soil moisture content, bulk density, grain size distribution, specific gravity and atterberg limits. Eight samples of soil was collected from non-landside area and landslide area. This study method found that relatively the physical properties of soil in Gual Ipoh are range from medium to high plasticity. Compared to the landslide area, the plasticity index commonly are relatively low with larger-sized particles.
