Abstract

Generally, untreated biomass has many shortcomings that led to it less suitable for use in the combustion process. For example, untreated biomass has a calorific content and a low fixed carbon. Therefore, this study was conducted with a view to using microwave torrefaction method to increase the fixed carbon content and calorific of the biomass to be used in the combustion process. Torrefaction is a process for the treatment of biomass at a temperature of 200-300 ° C to improve the content of the biomass. In this study was used as a microwave reactor for carrying out the process of torrefaction. The main focus of this study is to create a microwave reactor and making improvements to further enhance the results of torrefaction process. Two variables such as temperature and time have been applied to obtain the optimum level for torrefaetion process. As a result of torrefaction treatment in this study, can be seen fixed carbon content and calorific has increased and this has been proved that torrefaction can help in the effort to make appropriate use of biomass in the combustion process.
