Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of priming treatment on germination properties for Mimosa pigra and Musa acuminata. Seeds of these species were soaked in distilled water for 12 and 24 hours, hot water for three and six minutes and in 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.6% Potassium Nitrate (KNO₃) for 24 and 48 hours respectively. Scarification treatments been applied in this study involving mechanical scarification by using nail clipper and chemical scarification using 40% Hydrochloric acid (HCI) for three and six minutes. The seeds were sterilised using sodium hypochlorite (10%) for two minutes prior to germination tests. The treated seeds were germinated on filter paper in petri dishes and placed under the laboratory condition. At the end of experiment, the total number of germinated seeds, the percentage of germination, the germination speed and the germination energy were evaluated. The results indicated that the total of germinated seeds, gennination percentage, germination speed and germination energy for both species were affected significantly in all treatments. Results showed that the types of treatments and duration of treatment improve the rate of germination. Germination of M. pigra seeds gave high respond on mechanical scarification and hot water treatments while lower concentration of KNO₃ enhanced germination of M. acuminata seeds. Soaking seeds in cold water for 24 and 48 hours also have higher number of genninated seeds for M. pigra but not in M. acuminata. Therefore, seed treatment with Water (hydropriming) is a potential seed pre treatment and suggest in the future by improving the duration of soaking as it is low cost, easy to prepare and more effective.
