Abstract

Present study was focusing to characterize the fine particulate matter(PM₂.₅) in Penang in association with the influence of meteorological parameters such as precipitation, wind speed, wind direction, temperature,
relative humidity, and sea level pressure. The study was conducted by focusing three sample areas named as Prai, Nibong Tebal, and highway of Penang bridge. A total of 36
samples thrice per month for each location were collected starting from June to September, 2015. Meteorological data for precipitation, wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity, sea level pressure were obtained from the Meteorological Department of Penang on daily basis and 24-hour averages. Descriptive statistical analysis was conducted in characterizing the relationship
between PM₂.₅ concentrations and the target meteorological parameters. Pearson correlation was performed on PM₂.₅ mass concentration and daily average
meteorological data. The result showed that PM₂.₅ concentration ranged between 4.86 — 28.47 µg/mᶟ, 9.03 — 80.56 µg/mᶟ, and 18.06 - 79.51 µg/mᶟ with the overall mean concentration of 10.88 µg/mᶟ, 31.96 µg/mᶟ, and 39.35 µg/mᶟ for residential area, industrial area, and roadside respectively. Precipitation was not significantly influence the PM₂.₅ concentration, where negative correlation was obtained. Precipitation was not only accelerated the deposition of PM₂.₅ but also inhibited surface dust transport mechanism. Wind speed and wind direction were
the main influential factors influencing the PM₂.₅ dispersion in study area. Wind speed positively correlated whereas wind direction negatively correlated with PM₂.₅. The result indicated that most of the PM₂.₅ was transported from southerly wind which comprised of Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, and Melaka compared to northerly wind. Strong positive correlation was obtained between PM₂.₅ and temperature and between PM₂.₅ and a pressure. Correlation of PM₂.₅ and was statistically significant at p = 0.05 confidence level. Temperature and
air pressure influenced the transport and accumulation of PM₂.₅ by affecting convection process. Meanwhile, strong negative correlation was obtained between PM₂.₅ and humidity. All the results showed that PM₂.₅ distributions
were due to both local anthropogenic and long range sources in mainland Penang.
