Daily activity budget of Giant Panda (Ailuropoda Melanoleuca at Zoo Negara, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a native species of China that have been a flagship species for efforts related to habitat conservation. The efforts on Giant Panda’s conservation have been done to help in raising the number of Giant Panda and preventing the species from extinction as the number of Giant Panda is currently low in the wild. First pair of Giant Panda arrived at Zoo Negara, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on May 2014 as a diplomatic tie between Malaysia and China. It is as well for research, education and
conservation purposes of the Giant Panda in Malaysia. Daily activity budget of female and
male Giant Panda were studied at the Giant Panda Conservation and Exhibition Centre in
Zoo Negara, Malaysia from February 2015 until August 2015 by using scanning method.
Observation revealed that Giant Pandas at Zoo Negara use most of their time for inactive
behaviour (40.53%), followed by locomotion (26.57%), feeding (17.10%), grooming
(7.15%), excreting (6.71%) and the last is playing (1.94%). In comparison of sexes,
statistically only inactivity shows significant difference while other activities do not reach
the significant level. Qualitative results found that both Giant Pandas were doing
stereotypic behaviour such as head bobbing and waiting at the gate expecting for food
delivery.
