Abstract

Normally, corn stover silage in absence of microbial inoculants resulting low quality of silage with presence of fungus, mold and might be spoil because of low preservation method. Thus, with adding of EM in corn stover silage can reduce the spoilage and improved silage quality. This study investigated the effect of Effective
Microorganism (EM) on quality of com stover silage and to determine the nutritional value of EM-inoculated corn stover silage. The samples of corn plant collected from
PPK Tanah Merah and Agropark UMK Jeli. The present study aimed to identify the effectiveness of EM towards nutrition value on silage. Each sample has two variables
which are control (no EM) and EM-inoculated com stover silage. The pH meter is used to measure the pH value of silage while the nutrient value (CP, EE and ash) is
determined through the proximate analysis. After 21 days fermented, noticed that EM increased the fermentation rate with a significantly deeper pH value (P < 0.05)
compared to control group. The physical characteristics of both samples expressed a good ranging of quality silage which are not slimy, no presence of mold, brown-green and yellow-green color recorded also has pleasant smell. EM-inoculated com stover silage significantly decrease (P < 0.05) the % DM and had a significantly higher (P < 0.05) in term of % moisture loss and % CP for the both samples compared to control group. The result showed no significant difference (P > 0.05) of % EE in PPK and Agropark silage but EM-inoculated corn stover silage was shown higher EE value compared to control group. The % crude ash in Agropark corn stover silage reported
to has a significant different (P < 0.05) between control and EM-inoculated treatment while no statistical significant (P > 0.05) recorded for PPK corn stover silage. As a conclusion, the addition of EM had improved the nutrient value of corn stover silage, decreased the contamination level thus improved the quality of corn stover silage.
