Abstract

The thesis is about the determination of antimicrobial activity from C. argentea, A cathartica and M. Indica as medicinal plants in rural Kelantan, Malaysia. There are many potential herbaceous plants in Malaysian rainforest that can be discovered and the research about this has been conducted for a long time since pre-independence. However, the early research about Malaysian medicinal plants was started by the British biologist before the scientific knowledge about the benefits of these plants later becoming the concern of our researchers. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential antibiotic/antimicrobial activity contents in several testing plants. The testing was made on the selected bacteria to see the inhibition effects from that particular tester. The plant samples has been collected around the Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) Jeli Campus and dried for a week before the process of extraction. The plant extracts later was soaked into two types of solvents; ethanol and distilled water and has been tested on two types of bacteria; Escherichia coil ( E.coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S.aureus ) using two different methods; Disc Diffusion Method (DDM) and Agar Well-Plate Method (AWPM). Both method was aimed to obtain the same results in a different performance. After went through antimicrobial test and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) test, the results has shown that the water extracts of Celosia flowering tops as the best plant extracts against E.coli with the MIC values of 0.506 μg/ml and ethanolic extracts of Allamanda leaves was the best plant extracts against S. aureus with the MIC values of 0.392 μg/mI. These plant extracts has potential to undergo a further research by exploring its active compounds and has a good prospective to act as a wound healing agent.
