Abstract

The aim of this study is to produce bioethanol from coconut husk using fermentation process with the ultrasonics pretreatment technique and to determine the effect of sonication frequency and time treatment on b. methanol yield. Enzymes such as viscozyme were used to breakdown the cellulose in coconut husk. Saccharomyces cerevisiae,(yeast) also was used in the experiment for fermentation process. Three samples were prepared at different sonication frequency was varied to determine the effects of sonication frequency on ethanol yield at 37 °C. Another four samples were prepared to determine the effect of treatment time on ethanol yield with the pH was kept constant at 5.5. The ethanol concentrations were determined by running the samples in High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The results showed that the highest ethanol concentration was obtained at high sonication frequency and 1 hour duration treatment time. This indicated that high frequency sonication and 1 hour duration time treatment was the optimum parameter for the yeast to produce ethanol from coconut husk. The one way ANOVA results indicate that there was no significant difference in sonication frequency at (P<0.05) level for two conditions [F(2,6) = 0.561, p=0.598]. The one way ANOVA results also indicate that there was no significant difference in time treatment at (P<0.05) level for two conditions [F(3,8) = 2.862, p=0.104].
