Abstract

Mimosa pigra is a member of Mimosa (Mimosaceae) genus. This genus is known for various members who have a reputation in indigenous medicine. The present study was carried out to identify the classes of phytochemicals present in M. pigra, since there is limited study done on identification of phytochemical composition of M. pigra. The present research involves preparation of leaf extracts by using petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethanol and water as solvent. Each extracts were subjected to preliminary phytochemical screening through colour tests. The presence of phenolic acid and flavonoids in the extracts were detected by HPLC analyses. The results of colour tests showed the presence of alkaloids, phenols, saponins, flavonoids, terpernoids and phytosterols in the extracts. From the HPLC analysis, the presence of gallic acid, transcinnamic acid, 4-hydroxycinnamic acid and quercetin was detected in the prepared extracts of M. pigra. Thus, the present research evidenced that M. pigra is rich source of phytochemicals and could be exploited for medicinal purposes.
