Abstract

In this study, characterization of activated carbon produced from durian husk by chemical activation technique using potassium hydroxide (KOH) as activating agent. It is then carbonized and activated. The active carbon is the sieved between 300- 600 mm. The active carbon is then characterised according to proximate analysis and chemical properties. The proximate analysis is including moisture content, ash content, volatile matter and fixed carbon. The pore structure, elemental analysis is also done. The moisture content of Durian D-2 is better than the others which is 5.67%. Durian Kampung has better volatile matter where the reading is 12.00% and ash content is 9.00%. Durian Kacing Baju has the highest carbon content in EDX analysis which is 93.63% and also has high carbon content 86.83%. There were pores observed in SEM analysis and chemical compositions of carbon were observed in FTIR. . From the FTIR spectrum, we can observe that all the DK, DKB and DD-2have similar functional group, which are C-0, C-H at4000cm-1,400cm-1 .Then commercial adsorbent silica gel as compared with carbon using iodine titration and carbon has better adsorption than silica.
