Abstract

The development of high educational institutional is a main factor that can contribute to the greatest achievement on the global education. The existence of high educational institution especially Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) which act as the research study area had contribute to the mounted of the population from around places. The development of UMK had driven to the increased of population which cause an issue in the solid waste generation. UMK's student accommodations generate solid waste every day and there were two blocks consist of five level of floor of student accommodation. The study involved the two main block, Block A and Block B which are located inside the area of UMK Jeli Campus. The objective of the study was to determine the solid waste generation from UMK Jeli Campus's student and the level of awareness of the student toward waste disposal issue as the student is the majority communities in the UMK. The study was done by running a methodology on waste sampling and socio-demographic survey. The waste sampling was done by collecting solid waste for seven days consecutively in order to obtain the consumptive pattern of solid waste generated by the students. The collected waste were weight, mixed, quartered and the composition of the samples were determined. The amount of waste generated for a week in Block A was more compared to that generated in Block B. Food waste were the highest component produced in the solid waste, followed by plastics, papers, glass, textiles, metals, woods, rubber, soil and stone. The average on solid waste generated by a student per day was calculated at 0.7 kg/day. According to the study, the solid waste minimisation can be more efficient by the application on the awareness campaign and programme, plus practice the recycle custom in daily routine. Besides that, the study can create awareness on solid waste management among the students by evaluating the potential benefit that can be gained from the solid waste.
