Abstract

Textile industries can be found in most countries and their numbers keep increasing year by year. Wastewater discharged from textile industry can contain a variety of polluting substance including dye. To ensure the safety of effluents, proper technologies need to be used for the degradation of dye. The biological method is the most favorable as it is eco friendly which produce little or no hazard compare to physical and chemical methods. In this study, the main objective was to isolate, screen and identify different bacteria species from textile wastewater around Kota Bharu which have potential to degrade azo dye presence in textile wastewater. A selective agar which is Minimal Salt Media (MSM) medium containing 50mg/1 of dye concentration were used in this study. Seven potential bacterial species which are Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus arbutinovarans, Bacillus cereus, Enterobactor clocae, and Pseudomonas mendocina was isolated from the sample and their ability to reduce the colour of three textile dye, namely Remazol Red MX-BB (RR-198). Procion Blue HERD (RB-160) and Procion Yello HE4R (RY-84) was investigated. They were successfully identified through morphology, gram staining, and molecular 16s rRNA method. Bacillus arbutinovarans shows high potential in decolorize RR-198 which decolorize percent up to 73% of the dye within 96 hour in static culture. Several microbial consortia were develop and tested for their effectiveness. Overall the consortia able to give better decolorization compare to individual isolate.
