Abstract

The research are focused on the physical properties of Bambusa vulgaris or commonly known as Buluh Minyak in Malaysia. The samples the bamboo cuirns were taken at the Agropark vicinity area in UMK. The gives emphasis on the basic density. moisture content. swelling and shrinkage of the oar-b Do cuims The parameters used were the bamboo age at 2 and 4 year-c ---s portions at intemodes 2. 6. 10. 14, 18. 22. 26 and 30. The results showed that the basic density of the year 2 for the intemodes 2. 6. 10. 14. 18. 22. 26 and 30 were 438.20 g/cm³. 405.56 g/cm³. 448.88 g/cm³. 413.13 g/cm³. 230.71 g/cm³. 351.08 g/cm³. 334.10 g/cm³. and 461.59 g/cm³ respectively. The basic density of the year 4 for the intemodes 2. 6. 10. 14. 18. 22. 26 and 30 were 666.96 g/cm³. 743.51 g/cm³. 791.18 g/cm³. 747.01 g/cm³, 656.61 g/cm³. 628.43 g/cm³, 553.61 g/cm³ and 972.81 g/cm³. From the results. the basic density is increase when the ages of the culm bamboo increase due to the more compacted culms bamboo for age 4 years old. The physical properties of B. vulgaris are dependent on factors such as age and intemodes. The relationship between the factors and parameters such as basic density. moisture content, swelling and shrinkages can provide the information regarding strengths of the B. vulgaris.
