Abstract

In this study, the main objective is to measure water quality and predict the additional pollutant loads of Buloh River after the development of new Faculty of Earth Science by using QUAL2K. The water quality parameters such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (C) and ammoniacal nitrogen (NH₃‐N) are measured and tested to be inputted into QUAL2K model for modeling process. Chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS) which did not incorporated in the model are used to explain the trends of water quality. The measured data shows that Buloh River is considered slightly polluted with NH₃‐N at downstream where treated sewage effluents from existing STP are discharged. After additional loading, NH₃‐N is expected to reaches 1041.711.µg/L at 0.12km which falls into Class IV of NWQS. BOD₅ concentration is predicted to rise up to 2.87mg/L while DO concentration is expected to decrease to 3.88mg/L which able to maintain the water quality in Class II of NWQS. Temperature and pH will remain in the range of 26 to 30°C and 6.5 to 9 respectively. The simulated results of QUAL2K shows that the additional loadings from future STP are expected to increase NH₃‐N concentration to Class IV of NWQS while maintaining the other parameters between Class II and III of NWQS.
