Abstract

Essential oils are complex mixtures isolated from aromatic plants. Essential oils can be extracted using a variety method such. as cold-pressing, steam distillation and solvent extraction. Essential oils have a very high commercial value as it may possess antioxidant and antibacterial activities. It is widely used in aromatherapy, medicine, and cosmetic as well as flavoring food. This thesis presents the yield of extract from fresh peel of C. grandis obtained by using solvent extraction with different solvent that is petroleum ether and hexane. The hexane extract their and petroleum ether extract from fresh peel of C. grandis than were investigated for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Result showed that, the hexane extract show more antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. antioxidant activity as the maximum radical scavenging activity (43.74%) for hexane extract and (40.86%) for petroleum ether extract was observed at 7400 μg /m1 concentration of extract. The antibacterial activity against five types of bacteria that is Salmonella virchow, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli are using disc diffusion method. The hexane extract of fresh peel C.grandis showed more inhibition zone compare with Petroleum ether extract for of all bacteria except for pseudomonas sp there is no inhibition zone for both extract. The oil extracted also develop into product that is soap and the soap was tested for it antibacterial activity and the result shown that it only inhibit for bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus. This show that the extract has loss it antibacterial activity when it develop into soap. Overall the hexane extracts showed stronger antioxidant activities and antibacterial activities than petroleum ether extract.
