Abstract

The study conducted described the antibiogram of Pseudomonas sp. isolated from smoked Asian clam. Pseudomonas sp. is well known human pathogenic bacteria and multi-drug resistant bacteria. Pseudomonas sp. was successfully isolated from smoked Asian clams by using selective agar, Glutamate Starch Pseudomonas (GSP). In this present research study, there were 19 types of antibiotic used to be tested. The antibiotic used were amoxycillin (25 μg), ampicillin (10 μg), chloramphenicol (30 μg), colistin sulphate (25 μg), compound sulphonamides (30 μg), doxycycline (30 μg), erythromycin (15 μg), florfenicol (30 μg), flumequine (30 μg), fosfomycin (50 μg), gentamicin (120 μg), lincomycin (15 μg), nalidixic acid (30 μg), novobiocin (30 μg), oleandomycin (15 μg) , spiramycin (100 μg), sulphamethoxazole(25 μg), oxolinic acid (2 μg) and tetracycline (30 μg). The result reported that Pseudomonas sp. was sensitive against cloramphenicol (60%), oxolinic acid (80%), flumequine (90%) and nalidixic acid (100%) whereas gentamycin only showed intermediary sensitive. Resistance cases were found occurred in most of antibiotic applied which were ampicillin, amoxicillin, colistin sulphate, compound sulphonamides, doxycycline, erythromycin, fosformycin, lincomycin, oleandomycin, novobiocin, spiramycin and sulphamethoxazole with the range 60% to 100%. Thus, this present study may help to enrich the database information in literature regarding the study of bacteria in smoked Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea especially in Malaysia. This study also might point out the safety level of consumption in addition to build public awareness, minimize the risks and control the outbreak disease created by Pseudomonas sp.
