Abstract

Geological mapping has been used as the process of making observations of geology in the field. A GIS-based methodology has also been used to produce a Landslide Susceptibility Zonation map for a landslide-prone area. The study area is located at Kampung Sungai Mekong, Jeli, Kelantan. The aim of this study was to prepare a geological and Landslide Susceptibility Zonation map of study area and identify the important factors controlling the landslides. There are three phases of geological mapping process which is preliminary research/planning, data collection and reporting. It includes laboratory analysis for the thin section of the rock. The detailed general geology, geomorphology, and lithostratigraphy of study area are needed in order to produce geological map. The study area is located in igneous rock lithology composed of granite and andesite. Granite plutons exposed in Jeli namely Kemahang Granite (Trgrkg). The age of Kemahang Granite and andesite assigned by previous study is to be Triassic and Permo-Triassic. Besides that, to produce a Landslide Susceptibility Zonation map, a statistical knowledge-based system integrated with a Geographical Information System environment was applied to assess the study area. This thesis explains a system to assess automatically vulnerability due to landslide of a region by categorizing landslide hazard using spatial and temporal causative factors. The expert system has input, understanding, expert and output modules and uses digital spatial data of causative factors of landslide. The causative factors considered are slope, relative relief, rock, soil and land use. Input accepts thematic images of contributing factors for landslides, understanding module interprets to extract relevant information as required by expert module consisting of a knowledge base and inference strategy categorizing region into different susceptibilities of landslide. Finally the output model provides a Landslide Susceptibility Zonation map. The results of the system suggest that 66.4% of the study area can be categorized as having low hazard and 33.6% as moderate hazard.
