Abstract

Planting depth and soil type are important growth conditions which affect the performance of different crops. This research was conducted to find out the effect of different planting depths (0 cm, 2 cm, 4 cm and 8 cm) under two different types of soil (loamy soil and sandy soil) on seedling emergence, plant growth and yield performance of long bean. The experiment was done following Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications per treatment. Data were collected on seedling emergence, plant height, branches produced, number of leaves per plant, number of pods produced, weight of pods and seeds produced per pod. Loamy soil clearly gave the best result in respect of seedling emergence, growth, and yield of long bean compared to sandy soil. Sowing depth affected mean seedling emergence, plant height, branches produced per pod. Sowing at 4 cm on loamy soil presented the best results in terms of long bean harvest yield. Sowing beyond 4 cm gave the relatively lower seedling emergence, growth, and yield performance of long bean.
