Abstract

The polybag experiment was carried out to investigate the influence of water stress on growth and development of long bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The seeds and the plants were subjected to treated with different levels of water stress (3.0 liters of water, 2.5 liters of water, 2.0 liters of water, 1.5 liters of water, and 1 liters of water per week). Plant growth parameters recorded were plant height, leaf number, leaf area, number of pod per plant and dry matter per plant. The result showed that plant height, leaves number, number og flower, number of pod and plant dry matter were significantly affected by water stress levels. The moisture at the rate of 2.0 liters per week gave the most favourable condition for long bean growth and development. Whereas the other treatment showed retarded or slow growth and development due to the very high moisture (3.0 liters and 2.5 liters per week) and very low moisture (1.5 liters and 1 liters per week).
