Abstract

A long time ago most of the communities tend to use the natural herbs or medicinal plant as their food source or as healing medicine. Moreover, the natural source can heal or react better than the synthetic one without effecting the host when applying onto them. One of the plants that been used in the scientific investigation was various types of sweet potato or known as Ipomeoa batatas L. that use in the antimicrobial reaction. This research was proposed to reveal the antimicrobial activities of various types of sweet potatoes extract known as Hannah yams and Jewel yams against the Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The well diffusion test was carried out in order to determine the antimicrobial activity. The Dimethyl Sulfoxide solution (DMSO) used as negative control in this experiment and been inserted about 10µ1 for each well. In addition, Ampicillin act as positive control used was about 1000µg/m1 for the concentration while for each well been inserted about 10µl too. The findings of this research were the flesh part mix with hexane solvent of Hannah yam gave higher of diameter of zone inhibition which was 16.1mm against bacteria positive Staphylococcus aureus. For bacteria negative Escherichia coli also showed the flesh part mix with hexane solvent of Hannah yam gave higher of diameter of zone inhibition which was 12.82mm. These two applied for 1000µg/ml of concentration. Then, the highest zone inhibition for Jewel yams was peel part mix with hexane solvent which was about 16.75mm against Staphylococcus aureus and the highest zone inhibition against Escherichia coli was when used flesh part mix with 50% of ethanol solvent. As a conclusion, Hannah yams showed higher average of zone inhibition number compared with the Jewel yams and the hexane solvent was the types of solvent that can attract bioactive compounds from both of yams due the mixture between hexane solvent with the sample extract mostly gave higher number of zone of inhibition compared to the other solvents. The higher of concentration samples used influence the higher number zone of inhibition.
