Abstract

In this study, the extraction of rice husk cellulose was carried out to study its chemical composition and the characteristics of both untreated rice husk and chemically treated rice husk. Three extractions were carried out to obtain the pure cellulose. Chemically treated rice husk was treated using 5% NaOH. It shows that 5% NaOH treated rice husk possess a better outcome compare to untreated rice husk as it is a modification which modifies to a better properties. Three different characterizations were used in this study which are Fourier transform infrared analysis (FTIR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Functional groups exists in the samples were found and studied, the thermal stability and the crystalline phase of the samples were also obtained.
