Abstract

In emerging of eCommerce, wide uses of corrugated box in parcel had forced the paper industries to minimise the web breaking and search for alternative source of pulpwood. Sesbania grandiflora was being studied for making pulp and paper. However, the information of it is still very limited. Besides, parameter used for beating of this species is unknown. Therefore, this study was carried out to evaluate and investigate effect of beating revolution to pulp properties and its strength of paper produced derived from Sesbania grandiflora. In this study, the pulps were beaten in 5,000, 15,000 and 25,000 revolutions and tested respectively. Freeness of pulps was tested by Canadian Standard Freeness (CSF) according to TAPPI 227 om- 99. Opacity of paper was tested by Technidyne based on TAPPI 452 om-98. Brightness of paper was tested by CIE illuminant C based on ISO 2470. Thickness of paper was tested by digital micrometer based on TAPPI 41 1 om-97. Tensile strength of paper was tested by tensile tester according to TAPPI 494 om-96. Tearing resistance of paper was tested by Elmendorf tearing resistance tester according to TAPPI 414 om-98. Folding endurance of paper was tested by MIT tester according to TAPPI 511 om-02. From the result obtained, the effect towards freeness of pulp was significant. Besides, physical properties of paper like opacity also significantly affected after beating. For mechanical properties, the tensile strength of paper were significantly improved as well as in folding endurance had significantly increased up to optimum beating revolution. Fibre shortening and fibre straightening after beating had promoted better bonding. However, tear resistance of paper was significantly dropped after beating due to weakening in individual fibre strength resulted of fibre shortening. Based on the overall results, 15,000 beating revolutions was the optimum duration of beating for pulp and paper derived from Sesbania grandiflora.
