Abstract

This research is about discovering the chemical characteristic of fibre between coconut husk (Cocos nucifera), rice husk (Oryza sativa) and commercial cotton. The commercial cotton that act as standard are used directly that fall from the tree. As coconut husk and rice husk fibre are the abundant waste on landfills as it taken a longer time to disposes. By maximizing the usage of these biomass waste while comparing it with commercial cotton can lessen the waste. Fibre from coconut husk (CH), rice husk (RH) and commercial cotton (CC) were undergoes the analysis of FTIR, SEM and the rate of water absorption percentage. The fibres of coconut husk and rice husk are known to have lignocellulosic material for the application in various area such as composites and geotextiles. The fibres were prepared and then undergoes analysis. For SEM analysis, commercial cotton fibre has smooth surface compared to rice husk that is rough while for coconut husk fibre it seems like wrinkle. From FTIR result, it shows that these fibres contain cellulose. The analysis for rate of absorption, both of the fibres shows slight different. From the analysis, the chemical content of fibres was known and can be used in many function. Since a raw material were used, the fibres can be compared with the commercial cotton that does not undergoes with any process.
