Abstract

The city of Pare Pare is among one of the city located in the province of South Sulawesi, Indonesia with Makassar act as its Capital city. The province is bordered by Central. Sulawesi and West Sulawesi in the north, Bone and Southeast Sulawesi in the east, Makassar Strait in the west and Flores Sea or known as Makassar Straits in the south The city has an area about of 99.33 km2 and has a population of ± 280,846 inhabitants. Pare Pare city is one of the regency among that 24 regencies in South Sulawesi that located on the east coast of Makassar Straits. As human population begin to expand, they need more places to fulfil this demand within the limited space. Therefore, several studies need to be conducted in this area in order to find the suitable spaces to plan the town construction and urbanization without having any properties problem. On 24 October 2016, there was flooding happened at the Parepare City and it was considered as the worst since 1967 and causing a very impactful loss towards the residents here. The cause of flooding in the study area is also caused by topographical conditions and geological conditions in the study area. Besides, several parameters will be set up in order to get the accurate result such as the threat of inundation, earthquake and geological hazards. The factors for geomorphological constraints also been investigated included in this research are lithology, topography, slope gradient, flood zone and landslide. Various method that being used in this research including geological mapping to identify the geomorphology of Parepare and overlay the data gathered using ArcGIS. The final result of this research is by producing geomorphological constraints map for urban development at Paiepare to determine the barriers, limitations and also opportunity for Parepare city to develop in future.
