Abstract

With the rising amount of garbage produced and limited landfill area for waste disposal, recycling is one of thc most effective waste management techniques. Implementing the waste segregation process based on rnaterial type can support proper waste management and produces valuable recycling products. The conventional recycling approach, in which users rnust deliver waste in bulk to the recycling centre, may be inconvenient and discourage users from recycling. Furthermore, when the trash is delivered without any segregation process, it will cause the recycling product to lose its value due to contarnination in mixed waste dan hard to recycle the recycling product. To solve this problem, a smart bin for metal and non-metal waste is proposed to enhance the recycling process. Basically, an loT technology was applied in a conventional recycling bin concept, highlighted by the Government. This system is connected to Arduino UNO R3 as it microcontroller and several sensors such as Inductive Proximity Sensor, Infrared Sensor, and Ultrasonic Sensor. Sensors are responsible for identifying the type of garbage and helps to indicate user to throw the waste in the correct bin. The trash level detection functions also added into this system to make authorities alert about trash status in the container. All these features were controlled by it microcontroller. This system has been applied in small-range consumer testing, and the result shows the effectiveness of entire process. Hopefully, this prototype can boost Malaysia's motivation to practice the ecycling concept and it might be one of the frameworks for overcoming urban poverty by utilizing the waste-to-wealth concept.
