Abstract

Edible bird's nest is a high-value export commodity. The edible bird's nest industry faces various challenges regarding food safety demands for consumers, especially relating to the quality of edible bird's nests and having good qualities for exporting commodities to China. Therefore, many entrepreneurs are now venturing into edible swiftlet bird’s nest production (EBN). However, many of them lack knowledge of the environmental factors, including habitat characteristics suitable for EBN swiftlets. They suffer losses due to their ignorance of the needs to provide appropriate habitat and environment to build the EBN swallow house. This study aims to identify critical factors that affect the competitiveness of the EBN industry in Terengganu and analyse the management, harvesting, and marketing aspects of the EBN industry among entrepreneurs in Terengganu. Finally, this study also aims to propose a suitable entrepreneurial model for entrepreneurs in the EBN industry in Terengganu. This study involved a questionnaire: 246 questionnaire forms distributed to industrial swiftlet breeders in Terengganu. Field studies were conducted in nine EBN swiftlet houses in three different areas: forested, coastal, and urban; to gauge the environmental factors recorded in the houses. This study took place for three months, starting in February 2021 until April 2021. This study was done at three locations which were forest, coastal, and urban. The results of this study revealed that the most popular locations for EBN swiftlet houses are the forested area, followed by the coastal and urban area. It was also discovered that the forested area is by far the best and most productive area to build industrial EBN swiftlet houses. This study's results could help entrepreneurs plan an entrepreneurial model that is suitable for entrepreneurs in the EBN industry in Terengganu.
