Abstract

The novella Lingkaran (Endredos) originally titled Tumbangnya Pokok Tak Berlangit,The Fallen Tree Can No Longer Rise), was awarded the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (Malay Language Center and National Library) prize in 1962, in the novel competition. Lingkaran is one of the most renowned works of the author Arena Wati. The theme of the novella traces the fates and dilemmas facing the Malays during the early days of the country's independence and development. In the story, the author entertainingly presents the idiosyncrasies of the different ethnic groups, their characteristics, and new lifestyles. Arena Wati recounts the adventures of the characters while the expectations, fears, and doubts of each one of them are threaded together in search of their destinies in independent Malaysia and what it means for this multiracial society, to be part of the new national reality, full of ups and downs,

In a picturesque way he manages to describe the typical personalities of the races that color history. Among the novella's central protagonists are Franken, Hess, Foo Seng Kow, Arumugam, Tahir, Ramli, Munah, Zaleha, and others. Conflicts, emotions, love affairs and wedding plans are interwoven between them, all within a framework of exciting social activities, where idle and gastronomic outings abound. These interactions highlight the different customs, ways of life, religions and traditions of each group among the characters. In addition to everyday life, they intertwine in coexistence, passion, and their fears, generating friction, conflicts and giving rise to envy and intrigue full of secrets and tricks that besiege them throughout history culminating in the fall of a family. Lingkaran is one of the best classic novels of Arena Wati. Sandera also stands out,Bunga Dari Kuburan, Kuntum Tulip Biru , and Sakura Mengorak Kelopak which were noted by local and foreign literary critics, including A. Teew, as representative of the Malay novel genre.
