Abstract

The contribution of entrepreneurship to a country’s economic development through the creation of new products, innovation and the emergence of new ventures is so significant that it has attracted the interests of many researchers for about the past three decades. Since the concept of entrepreneurship has several dimensions, the researchers have used a variety of approaches and different perspectives to explain the phenomenon of new ventures as an underpinning theory of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship has been recognized as one of the new branches of science comparable to other social sciences such as economics, psychology, sociology, and business that already have solid theories from their own respective perspectives. Most approaches to entrepreneurship theories are still not comprehensive enough to describe the phenomenon, thus, it is no surprise that many researchers use a variety of theories to explain the entrepreneurship phenomenon. In filling this gap, a qualitative approach was used to study the case of twelve new e - commerce businesses in Malaysia by using interview techniques to building a new theory of entrepreneurship. It is based on the statistic of companies involvement in Malaysia that pursue the potential of e-commerce is still less, which is hundred thousand out of seven hundred thousand SMEs registered have their own website even though capable of generating high income. In the early stages, researchers have used the theoretical approach suggested by Gartner, 1985 as the basis for the new venture creation process. However, after the process of data collection and analysis is done, the researchers used a new theoretical approach that is based on the Actor Network Theory (ANT) to describe the phenomenon. The process of building this theory is called sensitization tradition and this tradition has linked the role of non-human factors as a complement to the theory of the role of human factors. This is consistent with the results of this study that demonstrate the role of technology (non-human) as a complementary factor in building the theory of entrepreneurship in addition to the role of human as found in sociology and psychology. The emergence of the technology theme is considered to be a complementary to the underpinning theory by Gartner and mutually affecting the whole system in order to explain the issue of the e- commerce new venture creation process in Malaysia through the building of a new comprehensive model.
